Special Winery Cellar Release

“My favourite New Zealand Riesling ever, THE Kiwi Riesling every cellar should have.”
Matt Deller FWDC Wine Programme Director

The last 25 cases in existence of this historic 2006 Riesling,
from just 620 cases made

Hi From Matt

I’m thrilled to offer you a special winery cellar library release of what I consider the finest New Zealand Riesling ever made, Pyramid Valley Lebecca Riesling 2006.

When I was Wine Editor for Dish Magazine, I wrote an article in 2007 naming my Top Five New Zealand wines in each varietal category.  My number one Riesling was this wine.  Never before had I tasted a kiwi Riesling that so echoed the great wines of Germany, the international benchmark for the variety.  I have still not tried a New Zealand Riesling that matches it for purity, layered complexity and succulent balance between concentration, sweetness and minerality.

“Tasted blind, many tasters might guess that the 2009 Dos Dedos de Frente was produced in the northern Rhone appellation of Cote-Rotie.”
92/100 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“A Spanish take on Côte Rôtie”
Anthony Rose, The Independent UK

Hi From Matt

I’m pleased to offer you the rare, thrilling Dos Dedos de Frente Syrah 2009, Spain’s challenge to the great Syrah’s of Cote Rotie.

From a tiny ½ hectare plot 900 metres high into the mountains of Calatayud, it is a Côte-Rôtie blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier.  Hand harvested and matured for 14 months in new and one year old French barriques, only 350 cases were made of this incredible Spanish triumph.

The Wonderful World of California wines – hand-selected gems

The Wonderful World of Californian Wine
has now become very affordable

Hi From Matt

Last week I offered a quartet of outstanding Californian Cabernets as selected during my February visit to the Napa and Sonoma Valleys.  Today, I’m very pleased to offer my picks of Chardonnay, Syrah, Bordeaux-blend and Zinfandel.

These wines show California’s rich diversity of world-class wines.   Their best Chardonnays are like richer, riper versions of complex, brioche and hazelnut white Burgundy.  Their Syrah’s are like supercharged northern Rhones.

Hand-Selected Cult Californian Cabernets

“Take a look at just about any major “blind” tasting held between California wines and those of France, especially Bordeaux and Burgundy. In nearly every instance, whether the panel of judges is European or American, or an international consortium, the California wines win the tastings. As a Francophile, the results of these tastings prove nothing other than that California is producing many world-class wines.”
Robert Parker, December 2009

“If you set your expectations high when buying any of these wines then they’re not only likely to be met but well exceeded. They offer peerless value for money and deliver an experience that represents all that is good about Margaret River and the Bordeaux in concert. I was personally moved and impressed by my tasting of these wines.”
Jeff Poole

Hi From Matt

I am delighted to offer you my selection of the finest Californian Bordeaux-style reds I tasted on my visit there in February.

While New Zealand cellars are replete with the finest wines of France, Italy, Spain, Australia and here, very little of California’s best red wines have been imported to this country.  Yet top Californian Cabernet Sauvignon is easily of the calibre of the best of those countries.   It offers a wonderful balance between the generosity of Australia with the structure of France.  They are incredibly pleasurable, luxurious wines, with layers of dark fruits, clove, cinnamon, dark chocolate and liquorice flavours.  They truly express where they come from.

Best ever $100 Brunello – 94/100 Tanzer… like Grand Cru Burgundy

“If you buy one $100 Italian red this year, this should be it.

The best value for money Brunello I’ve ever tried ”
Matt Deller, FWDC Wine Programme Director

Hi From Matt

I’m very pleased to offer you the stunning Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2006.

Lovers of Burgundy and indeed any great Pinot Noir should experience the silken texture and savoury textures of Brunello – the great red wine of Tuscany.  To say that this wine is an enjoyable tasting experience is a huge understatement, I opened it with the downstairs team last night and they were spellbound.   It has the beguiling complexity and sumptuous, yet fresh minerally palate normally seen in Grand Cru Burgundy.  I’m so enthralled by this wine I’m opening another bottle tonight, I wish I could have bought more than my six bottle personal allocation.
