An island I’d like to be deserted on…a memorable long lunch at Te Whau

If you asked me what wine I would take with me if I was deserted on an island, I’d say none – just make sure I’m deserted on Waiheke Island with all the glorious fine wine and food you could ask for.

I can think of nothing better than getting on the ferry to Waiheke to indulge in a long lunch at Te Whau on a perfect day where the sun is shining and there’s not a cloud in the sky.

2 weeks ago we did just that with 35 wine and food loving customers and the experience couldn’t have been better.

Gewürztraminer Vertical Tasting and Degustation Lunch at The Grove

As a wine buyer I get the privilege of attending some fantastic tastings, but being a big fan of Gewurztraminer I was particularly stoked to receive an invite to this very special event. Nick Nobilos remarkable wine combined with the legendary food and hospitality at The Grove was a tantalising prospect and I’d been counting down the sleeps to this day for a quite a while.

A mesmerising Kumeu River long lunch – ABC club will cancel their memberships

It was one of those memorable moments that reminded me of why I love what I do – not that I need reminding! 35 of us arrived at midday to The Engine Room at Northcote to a delicious glass of Kumeu River Pinot Gris to whet our appetites. The lovely atmosphere of this outstanding neighbourhood restaurant had us poised for what could only be a relaxing yet indulgent Sunday afternoon.

Before I go on to the rest of the experience, I have to say I would be in heaven if I had a local restaurant of this calibre round the corner from my house. Although, probably best I don’t or I’d find too many excuses not to cook! So on to the lunch.

We were joined by Michael Brajkovich MW, his wife Kate and the charismatic matriarch of the Brajkovich family, Melba. Their latest 2008 release Chardonnays are extraordinary and in our opinion the finest collection of Chardonnay released in NZ.

We wanted to showcase the differences between these 4 great wines that express the fantastic diversity that can be enjoyed with this magnificent variety. Members of the ABC club (Anything But Chardonnay) should rescind your membership that is depriving you of some of the greatest wines in the world. (more…)

Monday gone was not your normal Monday…

Monday gone was not your normal Monday; it was a day that will make many of you who read this blog somewhat envious of me and quite rightfully so!

While most of you headed for another day at your office I joined a small group of industry people on a day trip to Gisborne to visit the organic and biodynamic Millton Winery Estate. A 50-minute flight and we landed at Gisborne airport in brilliant sunshine and greeted by a smiling Annie Millton and daughter Monique; 10-minutes later we entered the gates of the picturesque Millton wine estate.
