2012 Vintage Review: Jeff’s spoken with leading winemakers all around NZ

Posted by Tracey on July 5, 2012. Category: Jeff's Column,Wine News

Hi from Jeff,

There has been much conjecture surrounding the 2012 NZ wine vintage; we’re all amateur weather experts and a little information as we all know is a dangerous thing. As I do annually around this time I have spoken to leading winemakers/viticulturists from the bottom to the top of the country covering nine key regions and secured a balanced and expert body of opinion on the overall quality of the 2012 vintage by region. As a result FWDC customers will be the most accurately informed wine lovers in NZ; empowered to make quality wine buying decisions and to not miss out on some excellent wines lost in vintage translation. Cheers Jeff

FWDC Charity Dinner

Posted by Lisa on May 24, 2012. Category: Jeff's Column — Tags: , , , , ,

Hi from Jeff,

On Wednesday night I had the pleasure and privilege to host a very special dinner in our FWDC Cellar Lounge.  Canapés followed by 4-courses interspersed with Amuse, Cleanser and Cheese platter served up by Michelin Chef extraordinaire “Phillip Reynolds” of Difference Catering. The matching wines came from my cellar; which incidentally were poured throughout the evening by Sir Michael Hill (golfer-businessman) and myself.

A memorable night of food and wine

Last night Virginia, Matt and me dropped into Sake Bar 601 in Kingsland for a late dinner after finishing our fabulous French Wine Tour presentation to prospective clients earlier.

Sake Bar 601 is an intimate local restaurant located in Auckland’s Kingsland suburb serving high quality Japanese inspired cuisine. You can always count on fresh, high quality ingredients traditionally prepared and they’re scrumptiously good. They regularly change their wine list which is always eclectic in its well chosen offering and fairly priced, the service is always welcoming, friendly and efficient so we have become regulars there. When you see legend chef “Michael Meredith of Meredith’s” dining there with his family (as we did some months ago) you know you’re in for a quality experience.

An update from the engine room

Posted by Andie on July 1, 2011. Category: Jeff's Column

Hi from Jeff

So far 2011 has been a dynamic period in the 14-year life of The Fine Wine Delivery Company (FWDC). From its humble beginnings in 1997 operating out of a spare bedroom to expanding into our 50 Cook Street premises with 18 strong staff, we’ve experienced a lot of change and growth. These days, I very seldom get to catch up with the many loyal customers I used to serve on the shop floor. Now I spend much of my time in the engine room of FWDC, and it is from here I thought I’d update you on the family, team and exciting developments at FWDC.

Firstly, Virginia, Tracey, and Richard are all well. I am the exception, in that I underwent replacement knee joint surgery late 2010 and am currently recovering from a spinal fusion carried out mid June.  Sadly this means no golf for the rest of 2011, but I’ll survive. Otherwise the rest of my body is in great heart so to speak; and you know what they say, a wine every day keeps the doctor at bay.

Things have been on the move at FWDC in the last 12-months:

Chris Williams, whom most of our customers have purchased wine from in the last 8-years was promoted to the critical role of Senior Wine Buyer and tasting panel member.  To bolster this critical process he was joined earlier this year by Andrew Bulman, who has been with FWDC for 6 years and known to many of you.  Together they select the finest tasting wines and negotiate the best deals so we can provide you with the best wine experiences.

Mark and Lewis, our wine advisers are rapidly building up a loyal customer following in-store and via e-mail/phone contact. As our wine experts they help you make informed buying decisions.

Brad and Lisa are our friendly frontline customer services team processing ever increasing volumes of Internet/e-mail and phone orders/inquiries with professional aplomb.

Bryce and Hayley make a formidable despatch, inwards goods/inventory team and I feel comfortable in saying that FWDC service levels are the best they have ever been in 14-years. This means you get fast delivery of your orders.

Neil Malla is balancing our books with absolute precision with the help of his wonderful assistant Mary; he runs admin like boot camp!

Tracey has managed with precision the Internet and Marketing arms of FWDC and Best Wine Buys for the last 13 years, so much so that she required another assistant to join Andie. Kiri joined the team in April and between all three of them they’re conjuring up many wonderful and exciting new wine events, Internet developments, brochures and e-mail offers.

Mid June we welcomed Matt Deller to the ranks of FWDC; Matt has worked with wine for 15-years accruing many national and international wine judging miles including passing the MW tasting exam. He enjoyed 12-year tenure as business partner to Steven Bennett MW in the very successful Bennett & Deller Wine Company. Matt’s role covers International wine buying, FWDC employee wine education, special wine tastings, participation in the wine tasting panel and the management of our rapidly growing annual Bordeaux en-primeur program.

General Manager Richard Poole is responsible for getting our exuberant and ever growing team to be cohesive, efficient, happy and well trained. Richard’s view is that everyone at FWDC, regardless of their role, must understand and appreciate wine at a high level. He recently had the FWDC team complete the WSET Level 2 Intermediate Wine Qualification this year and is lining everyone up for the advanced course in the near future.

Virginia as always is the glue, the trouble-shooter, and these days is reviewing and managing administration of our fully tenanted wine cellar business. Me? My current role is referred to as the ‘Brightness of Future’ for FWDC. Loosely translated it means I am responsible for creating new business opportunities; to be frank, I thought it might be quite a doddle, but no! I’m having some success and as a result am busier than I’ve ever been. I will share some of my forthcoming successes with you in coming publications of FWDC’s brochures in the latter half of 2011.

Cheers Jeff

Jeff’s Review of the Penfolds Stunning NEW Reds

Posted by Andie on March 1, 2011. Category: Jeff's Column — Tags: , ,

Hi from Jeff,

I’ve personally been involved with Penfolds Wines for 34-years and for 10 of those years I worked with them in Australia so I have a special appreciation for their history and greatness; I’ve tasted Bin wines made as far back as the 1960’s and Grange from the 1950’s plus collected these great reds over several decades for my own enjoyment.

These latest 2008 and 2009 Bin red wine releases are as good as I have ever tasted. It is my personal belief that current Chief Winemaker Peter Gago (only the 4th in over 60-years) will in the fullness of time be judged the most influential figure in the evolution of these iconic wines since legendary founding winemaker; the late and dear Max Schubert.

Which reminds me; there is a remarkable tale of Max’s courage, perseverance and belief in creating the Grange and Penfolds legacy, it is called ‘Max Schubert Winemaker’ and is authored by Huon Hooke (first published in 1994). I’ve read it a couple of times and I recommend you seek out this intriguing and inspirational tale.

This year also herald’s the release of a new Bin red – Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz, a full bodied pure bred Barossa Shiraz that sits in the illustrious company of 389 and 407 (see below for full details).

Finally the 2nd release of the Bin 23 Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills is a very lavish experience but definitively Pinot in taste with a classic rich sweet and savoury palate and likely to age over a 7-10 period.

Jeff

Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz

The crown jewel of the Bin releases 389 is often referred to as “Baby Grange” because components of Bin 389 are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange and they don’t come better than this striking 2008 release. New aromas appear every time your swirl the glass; notes of black forest gateaux, chocolate fudge icing, sweet black cherry, vanilla, black currant… I could go on! Further confirmation of its pedigree shows in the saturation of black fruits, mocha, liquorice and spices, refined spicy oak and refreshing blueberry infused finish. Without doubt this is a 20+ year wine, but don’t be afraid to decant a bottle with a good Beef Fillet, Enjoy!

Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon

407 lovers should quickly load up their cellars with this gorgeous 2008 release that has classic Cabernet aromas of graphite, cassis, currants and brambly spices. Those characters transcend into the taught, flavoursome layers of the palate enhanced by liquorice, olive tapenade and wild berries wrapped in aristocratic tannin and warm savoury oak. Finishing with power, finesse and freshness this stunning 2008 will be at its best circa 2020 – 2025 if professionally stored.

Bin 150 Shiraz (New Release)

This stunning new Marananga is the epitome of full bodied Barossa Shiraz. Its striking aromas of black fruits, vanilla, desiccated coconut and savoury spices allude to the endless tide of Black Barossa fruits laced with tastes of aniseed, sweet black cherry, kirsch and spices. Deeply impressive its final act is to seduce you with hints of black forest gateaux and dark coffee beans. This limited premium Shiraz will quickly join the ranks of 389 & 407 at the top of the Penfolds Bin releases, Enjoy 2012 – 2020+

Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz

Bin 28 is legendary among South Australian wine aficionados; it’s big, ripe and packed with flavour but so very smooth and creamy. Our team can’t remember tasting one better than this stunning 2008 effort although Jeff says “I would class it equal or better than the legendary 1998”. The deep consuming aromas of black fruits, violets, sweet oak, vanilla, black olive and blueberry quite literally causes a moment of meditation while the powerful yet incredibly layered and smooth palate leaves an impression of $50+ dollar Shiraz. Buy as much as you can but remember the best rewards come to those with patience, Cheers!

Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz

The elegant alter ego to Bin 28, Bin 128 is aged in a mixture of new and seasoned French hogsheads helping to accentuate the pepper, spice and floral characteristics of Coonawarra. Aromatically a wonderful contrast of spicy/savoury tones comes first followed by hints of refined red fruits and soy. There are plenty of boysenberry, raspberry and milk chocolate tastes to savour on the palate plus a coating of fine grain coco tannin adding interest and feel. It’s all together rather irresistible now however there’s no doubt this epic vintage will still be drinking in ten years time, Enjoy!

Bin 138 Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre

138’s Grenache dominant red blend is so aromatically alluring and seductively flavoured it’s like nothing you’ve experienced before. Smelling of spring flowers, fresh black berry and black liquorice the pinot-esque (silky) like palate harbours a deep, creamy collection of cola, chocolate and black plum flavours. According to Peter Gago “The best-to-date Grenache predominant 138” and we’re in absolute agreement. Enjoy now and through 2016+
