Max founded the Penfolds red wine program with the internationally iconic and legendary Shiraz known as â€˜Grangeâ€™ with the first commercial release off the 1952 vintage. Thereâ€™s a remarkable tale of Maxâ€™s courage, perseverance and belief in creating the Grange legacy, it is called â€˜Max Schubert Winemakerâ€™ authored by Huon Hooke and first published in 1994. Iâ€™ve read it a couple of times and I recommend you seek out this intriguing and inspirational tale. In the early 1960â€™s, once Max had begun to get due recognition for his first several vintages of Grange, he was able to persuade the family to let him create a family of â€˜Bin Redsâ€™ utilizing the best regional fruit which began with the 1960 vintage release of Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz and Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz. The family was expanded with the release of the Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz in 1962. Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon joined the Bin line-up in 1990 and became an instant hit with Penfolds Bin red lovers, In 1992 the most recent of the Bin reds, Bin 138 Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre was launched.
