Wines of the Year 2011

The Top 12 Wines of 2011

Hi from Matt

Now that we’ve come to the end of the year, it seems appropriate to reflect on the stand-out wines of 2011.  Thinking back, it’s incredible how clearly the greatest wine experiences over 365 days of wine tasting and enjoyment rise to the forefront.    Identifying my Top 12 Wines Of 2011 was straightforward, the hard part was securing extra allocations.  For example, a mere 85 cases were made of my top New Zealand Pinot, Rippon ‘Tinkers Field’ 2009, so I was only able to secure an additional 24 bottles above the generous allocation we had already received.

While certainly not the cheapest wines I tasted, they were far from the most expensive wines, and in most cases they represent fantastic value.  These are the wines that I stocked my personal cellar with this year, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.  They are available this week on a strict first-reply basis.

It is with great delight that I offer you the legendary wines of Chateau Cos d’Estournel;
six vintages back to 1986.

Hi From Matt

When I passed the Master of Wine tasting exam in 1998, the red wine paper featured five vintages of Cos d’Estornel from 1989 to 1993 and I correctly identified the wines as coming from a ‘second growth Medoc estate’. After tasting several recent vintages last week at dinner with Jean Guillaume Prats, President and Director General for Cos d’Estournel, I am in now in no doubt that Cos is without doubt the leading estate in St-Estéphe, clearly making First Growth-quality wines, some of the greatest wines of Bordeaux today.
