Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Noir Cellar Release
Limited-Edition, Collector’s Vertical Dozen
2004-2010 in special wooden presentation case
Hi From Matt
I’m delighted to offer you the opportunity to secure one of just 80 limited edition Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Noir Collectors’ Vertical Dozens; 2004-2010 vintages in a special wooden presentation case.
One of the most rewarding experiences for any wine lover is tasting successive vintages of a single classic wine, watching how the wine evolves over time and seeing what similarities terroir and the stamp of the winemaker give each wine, and the different individual characteristics of each vintage.
This will be a cherished gem in any cellar, offering the opportunity to gather friends around to taste and compare 2004 to 2010 Martinborough Vineyard Pinot. Or drink each one at its own optimal peak, providing years of pleasure, enjoying one of New Zealand’s greatest Pinots every year at its prime.
The dozen includes one bottle of each vintage, and six bottles of the outstanding 2010 vintage, so that you can watch it evolve over several years.
It’s wonderful that such an illustrious estate as Martinborough Vineyard have provided this unique opportunity. As Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate says “Martinborough Vineyard remains one of the country’s most acclaimed producers and is blessed with some of its oldest Pinot Noir vines.” They call the estate an “icon of New Zealand, whose wines helped put their Pinot Noir on the international map.”
Michael Cooper names it a Super Classic Wine of New Zealand saying, “This was the first consistently distinguished Pinot Noir made in New Zealand. An intensely varietal wine, it is typically fragrant, with sweet-tasting fruit and cherryish, spicy, complex flavours. In the past, it impressed principally with fragrance and finesse, rather than sheer scale, but in recent years the wine has become markedly bolder. Grown on the shingly Martinborough Terrace, it is made from vines ranging from young to over 30 years old, fermented with indigenous yeasts, matured in French oak barriques (33 per cent new), and bottled unfined and unfiltered.”
Winemaker Paul Mason explains how this unique offering came about:
“The inspiration for this special limited release came early in 2011 when I held a vertical tasting of our recent Pinot Noir vintages in Hong Kong. I tasted through vintages dating from the current 2009 release back to the 2003 with our distributor and a select group of wine writers and educators. The tasting was extremely well received and was a real highlight of the trip for me. It showed just how good Martinborough Pinot can be in both its youth but more especially as it ages.”
These vertical tastings where successive vintages of the same wine are lined up are a great way of showing how Pinot ages from its youthful exuberance of rich fruit and tight firm tannins to complex secondary aged characters and rich soft tannins. This is exactly what great Martinborough Pinot is all about.
After the tasting we talked about how good it would be to package this tasting up and sell it to lovers of Pinot so they too could experience the beauty of new and aged Martinborough Pinot. On return I eagerly went down into our cellar to see how much wine we had. Thankfully over recent years we have cellared greater volumes of our Pinot so the idea started to gain momentum. Releasing older Pinots is a real pleasure for me as the opportunity to purchase cellar-aged wines is extremely rare in the New Zealand market.”
