Considered by some to be the most significant event benchmarking Bordeaux Chateaux since the original 1855 classification, last week Robert Parker lead a Grand Tasting of what he describes as “The Magical 20″ – twenty Bordeaux Chateau that he considers to be of “First Growth Quality”. As Parker said where the tasting was held; “I have chosen estates that produce wines of first growth quality, although technically not first growths. Consequently, they are under-valued and very smart acquisitions.”
Villa Maria are NZ’s most awarded wines. It is often easy to overlook the quality of larger wineries like Villa Maria and many people don’t realise that the great wines of Esk Valley and Vidal are also a part of the Villa Maria stable. Across the board they make excellent quality wines representing fantastic value at every price point. The Single Vineyard and Reserve wines are truly something special. From Astrolabe’s point of view 2008 and 2009 were both pretty good years, due to the very good health of the canopies in the vineyards. This is despite the notional over-cropped situation in Marlborough…our 2008 Marlborough SB was probably as good as any since 2005. We are so much driven by the Awatere vineyards, and I think the Awatere came through 2008 better than Marlborough as a whole. (more…)
