It is with tremendous pleasure that I offer you the superlative Sacred Hill Special Selection 2010 Gimblett Gravels Reds.

The Fine Wine Delivery Company has a rich history with these classic Hawkes Bay reds; I distinctly remember tasting the very first ‘Selection Series’ wine with Jeff, 1998 Helmsman.  Jeff tells me that he opened a bottle of that 14 year old, cellar-aged gem recently and it is drinking beautifully.  These 2010’s are the best releases I have tasted under these illustrious labels, arguably the finest selection of Gimblett Gravels reds of the 2010 vintage.

Pioneered by the adventuring spirit of their Italian born founder in 1917, Santa Ema’s home is in the beautiful Maipo Valley, Chile. The vineyards are 500-550 meters above sea level; the alluvial, stony soils, hot days and cool nights combine to make concentrated, full-bodied red wines. Today, Santa Ema’s resources of 100+ year old vines which are all hand-picked, produce some of the finest value wines in the world.

It was truly a privilege to have a private tasting with Steve Smith, Master of Wine at Craggy Range, reviewing the first verticals of the Le Sol Syrah and Sophia. Two of the Hawkes Bay’s finest reds, it was certainly the highlight of our 2010 tasting calendar to date. (more…)
